Leadership Style and Organisational Sustainability in Nigerian Oil Producing Areas Development Commissions
This study examined the influence of leadership styles on organisational sustainability in Nigerian Oil Producing Areas Development Commissions, given the growing need for sustainable development in environmentally sensitive regions. These commissions operate within oil-producing communities characterised by environmental degradation, governance challenges, and socio-economic pressures, making sustainability a critical priority. Despite their strategic importance, limited empirical attention has been given to how leadership styles shape sustainability outcomes in this sector. The study adopted a survey research design. From a population of approximately 2,500 employees, a sample size of 335 respondents was determined using the Krejcie and Morgan formula. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were employed to ensure representativeness. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, which was validated and tested for reliability, yielding a Cronbach Alpha coefficient above 0.824, indicating strong internal consistency. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression. The findings revealed that transformational leadership and democratic leadership have positive and statistically significant effects on organisational sustainability. In contrast, autocratic leadership (exerts a negative influence. The model’s explanatory power indicates that leadership styles account for 55% of the variation in organisational sustainability. The study concludes that transformational and democratic leadership are critical drivers of sustainability, while autocratic leadership undermines it. It recommends participatory leadership, continuous leadership development, and performance evaluation systems to enhance sustainability outcomes.
