Board Characteristics and Management Efficiency of Listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria
This study investigates the effect of board characteristics on management efficiency with the aim of finding the role of board characteristics of board size (BS), board independence (BI), board Gender Diversity (BGD) and board meetings (BM) on how banks management utilizes resources to achieve the objective of maximizing profit. Data of 12 Nigerian listed deposit money banks from 2013 – 2022 were analyzed using linear regression technique. The study found that board characteristics have a significant positive effect on management efficiency when all board characteristics of size, independence, meeting and gender diversity are studied in aggregate. It further found that board characteristics exert influence on management efficiency when studied separately. The study concludes that board characteristics have significant positive effect on management efficiency of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Hence, recommends that all the attributes of the board of directors covered by this study should be considered and upheld by the shareholders when setting up the board as their collective presence tends to significantly improve management efficiency.
