The welfare of Nigeria’s ageing generation has emerged as a pressing developmental concern amid rapid demographic shifts, weakening traditional family support structures, and fragile institutional welfare systems. This study examines the multifaceted challenges and opportunities surrounding ageing in Nigeria, highlighting the need for proactive approaches that combine policy reforms with supportive community initiatives. Drawing on conceptual, empirical, theoretical, and comparative perspectives, the research underscores how older adults face vulnerabilities in income security, healthcare, and social participation, exacerbated by poverty, urbanization, and gender inequalities. The study employs Activity and Continuity theories to demonstrate that active participation and sustained role preservation enhance wellbeing in later life, contrasting with the inadequacy of disengagement models. Comparative evidence from South Africa, Ghana, and Nordic countries further reveals the transformative impact of institutionalized welfare systems, while technology and digital inclusion emerge as underutilized yet vital tools for improving ageing outcomes in Nigeria. Findings corroborate existing scholarship while advancing the discourse by integrating cultural, health, gendered, and technological dimensions. The study concludes that sustainable elder welfare in Nigeria requires a hybrid model that strengthens institutional frameworks, leverages community based support, and incorporates innovative approaches for inclusivity. Policy implications point to the urgent need for universal pensions, geriatric healthcare, digital literacy programs, and gender sensitive welfare measures to safeguard the dignity and security of Nigeria’s older population.
