Untangling the Nexus between Workplace Incivility and Organizational Performance in Lagos State
Workplace incivility is costing organizations massive amounts of money and huge waste of resources while affecting the financial, market share and operational performance of organizations in the wrong direction. This study unlocked the correlation between workplace incivility and organizational performance among working class professional master’s students working in various organizations in Lagos state and of which ninety-nine participants took part. Three hypothesis were tested using Pearson product-moment correlation analysis on SPSS version 20. The result of the first hypothesis test demonstrated that a weak negative statistically significant correlation was detected between workplace incivility and organizational performance. But the second hypothesis test revealed that a weak negative statistically insignificant bivariate correlation existed between supervisor incivility and organizational performance in the study context. The third result showed evidence of a moderate negative statistically significant association existing between coworker incivility and organizational performance. This rare study recommended that there should be the incorporation of a comprehensive emotional intelligence training component at every level of training and development (T&D) program and that workplace incivility should also be integrated into the human resource (HR) accounting method utilized as part of requirements for performance appraisal, and that the importance of workplace civility should be reinforced from the hiring process to the induction and orientation programs for new employees. Finally, a crystal clear written code of conduct to guide expected conduct should be made available to which every employee must consent, and failure to adhere to it must come with disciplinary consequences.
