Firm attributes and sustainability reporting of firms listed in the Nigerian consumer goods sector: A logistic model approach
sustainability reporting in Nigeria especially in the consumer goods sector, which is at the core of the nation's economy cannot be overemphasized. The study utilized content analysis and ex-post facto research design. The population comprised all twenty-one (21) consumer goods firms listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Group as of December 31, 2023. Meanwhile, seventeen (17) out of the twenty-one firms were included in the sample, chosen using a filtration sampling technique to select only those firms with complete records of all necessary data for measuring the study's variables within the covered period. Data spanning ten years (2014-2023) were collected from the annual reports and accounts of these firms. The analysis employed a robust random panel logistic regression technique using STATA 13.0 software. The study found that firm size has a significant positive effect on sustainability reporting, while firm age and firm profitability have an insignificant but positive effect on sustainability reporting of consumer goods firms in Nigeria. It is recommended that regulatory bodies and industry associations provide resources and incentives for encouraging smaller firms to adopt sustainability reporting practices. These efforts can include training programs, monetary incentives, or simplified reporting structures tailored to their capacities. It is also recommended that all firms, regardless of their age of establishment and profitability, continually strengthen and improve their sustainability reporting practices to address the changing expectations of stakeholders and adhere to regulatory requirements.
