Ownership Structure and Earnings Quality of Listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria
Abstract The research focuses on ownership structure and earnings quality of the listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. Using an ex-post facto research design, it analyzes quantitative data from annual reports of the nine banks that were on NGX Group’s list by the end of 2023, which include the data of the banking year ended in 2014 to 2023. The study also established the use of a generalized least square (GLS) regression model with STATA 13.0 software, and the following findings which identified that managerial ownership and ownership concentration have negative relation to the earnings quality while institutional and foreign ownership has positive relation to the earnings quality of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The study recommended that deposit money banks should strive for a balanced managerial ownership structure aligned with long-term interests, encourage institutional investor participation, advocate for conducive regulatory environments, including transparency and ease of business for foreign entities, and implement policies to mitigate ownership concentration risks. These strategies aim to enhance earnings quality and promote stability within the deposit money banking sector.
