Succinctly, this study interrogatively investigates the fairness of oil companies to their operational environment host communities, given the perceived profits, operational externalities and adverse reports from the oil business and environmental activists. Accordingly, this study examines the level of environmental accounting and corporate response of oil companies in the mirror of their vision and mission statements. Consequently, this study adopted a quant-content analysis design to rate and translate desirable qualitative secondary data in the vision and mission statements of a sample of 13 oil companies for empirical analysis. This is a novel approach that is different from the conventional approach of generating and using data from questionnaire, interviews and other secondary sources. Findings from content analysis, and t-test (test of mean difference) showed that on the average, the contents of the vision statements of oil companies in the Niger Delta region do not adequately reflect environmental accounting intention, but their mission statements fairly reflect environmental consciousness and accounting intention. Accordingly, this study concludes that on the average, the level of awareness, seriousness and compliance of oil companies to existing regulatory legislations on environmental consciousness and accounting intention is low, and that most oil companies do not deeply consider environmental sustenance in their corporate plans and goals. This study also concludes that oil companies in Nigeria practice environmental accounting unconsciously and at will.
